Being so close to Ari was torture. Sure, I’ve been near beautiful women before but she is different. There’s a heightened pull to be close to her that I’ve never felt. It nearly drove me mad not to just throw her on the bed behind us and have my way with her. It's obvious that she’s into me, as well as the other two and I don’t know how to feel about it all. Between this deep need to be near her, and the thought of why she’s pulled us together—I’m torn.

“Oli, I think that blade is clean enough.” Ari plops beside me dressed in a thin gown, running a fork through her long locks.

Looking down at the cloth, it registers to me how long I’ve been lost in my lustful thoughts. There’s a tenseness in the air, and I’m afraid I know the only way to relieve it. The question is—should I? Ari is beautiful and daring …. And dangerous. She’s been through so much, can I trust her consent? What if she regrets being with me afterward? I couldn’t bear it.

Turning toward Ari, I set the sword at my side. “How are you feeling?” I manage to stutter out.

Ari scrunches her nose, “Feeling about what?”

Raising my hands in the air, I let out a long breath, “This, everything. You’ve been through more trauma than most people have their whole lives in under a week!” Taking her hand in mine, I stare into her ocean-blue eyes and try for all that I have to see who she is underneath.

“I feel scared, angry, determined, and passionate,” Ari leans in, lightly brushing her lips over mine. “The only reason I’m not falling apart right now is the three of you. Harmony brought you to me for a reason.” She looks over to the dagger that’s propped on a chair. “And I don’t think it’s just for the blood of my enemies.”

“Do you … think of him?” I turn away. I can’t imagine the hurt she must be hiding.

“Sometimes, but it feels so far away. I don’t know how to explain it other than I think Harmony helps,” she sighs.

“I understand your mission.” I swallow. “My father and I hunted down the man who took my little sis from us,” I choke out, remembering the night.

Ari freezes. Hoping I haven’t said the wrong thing, I take her hand in mine. “There has to be more to this than killing them. Otherwise, you’ll be left feeling hollow at the end.” I stop before I lose control of my feelings.

“I know,” Ari shifts her body toward me. “That’s why I have you three. Let me in, Oli. I need you.”

The door opens just as I dip my head toward Ari and I let out a groan.

“Sorry to, er, interrupt,” Storm chuckles. “We found nothing. Best we all rest for tonight.” He sits on the other side of Ari. Wendell latches the door and begins pulling off his boots.

“You two better get in the bath before you even think of laying on this bed,” Ari pinches her nose.
